Kitchen islandSample
01 Brief
A client wanted an island they could cook at and sit at, in a narrow kitchen, with a top that would take hot pans and daily use.
02 Timber
Spotted gum for the top and frame: hard, stable once dry, and a colour range that sits well against painted cabinets.
03 Making

Stage 1
Drawing
A dimensioned drawing of the island and the room, checked against the client's measurements.

Stage 2
Timber
Boards chosen and laid out so the grain runs across the top in one direction.

Stage 3
Making
Top glued up and flattened by hand and machine. Frame joined with drawbored tenons.
PHOTO TO COME — frame assembly, clamps on -
Stage 4
Finishing
Three coats of hard-wax oil with a light sand between coats.
PHOTO TO COME — oiling the top, raking light
04 Finished
The island sits 900 mm from the bench behind it so two people can pass. The top is oiled, and the client was given a tin of the same oil.
